New year, new computer? Well, not quite for that reason, but I am getting a new one, and I'm taking you along for the ride. What I get, specifically, will likely not apply to you, but the process I go through almost certainly will someday. Step one is simple: an inventory of what I'll be replacing.

Tired of teeny, tiny text? Want to make things bigger? There's a wrong way (that used to be a right way), and the right way that Windows 10 actually makes easy.

My favorite quote from this week's third article is "Email, in concept, is magic". How true. And along with that magic comes the occasional obscure error message. This week we tackle "relaying denied".

I've decided it's time for a new computer.

My laptop has become unreliable and needs replacing. On top of that, I find myself juggling computers — a desktop, a laptop, and another laptop — more than I suspect I should.

While my decisions are not likely to apply to your situation, I think that my replacement process may be interesting and informative enough to share in a series of articles. Specifically, I'll take stock of where I am (this article), what I use my technology for, and the questions I ask myself as I decide what to get.

How Can I Make the Text on My Screen Larger?

I am “old” … so I need to use a magnifying glass to read a lot of the screen words. I suppose that they are in a six or eight-point font. Can I make the screen text larger? Say to a 10- or 12-point font?

I know how you feel. My eyes aren't all they used to be either.

The good news is, it's actually easy to make the fonts bigger, though the setting is often well hidden.

The bad news is, it's also easy to do the wrong thing and end up with something that seems better, but isn't.

What Does "Relaying Denied" Mean?

I hope you might be able to help with the following problem. When attempting to send email I got the error message “The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. Relaying denied. Proper authentication required.” What does that mean, and how do I fix it?

To understand what this message means, we need to understand, at least at a conceptual level, how email makes its way from your outbox to your recipient's inbox.

That trip can be short or long, depending on a number of factors.

And one of those factors is the relay.
