Is this receipt for software I didn't order valid?
Is this a new form of attack? I just received the email which purports to let me download a software upgrade which I haven't ordered. The reply address is ******.ch. I will obviously not be clicking on any of the links in the mail, but I have no idea if there is anything else I should do with it. |
The question included the text of email that looked like a receipt from an online software purchase or Windows Vista Ultimate, with download instructions.
Your instincts are right not to click on any of those links.
It's not a new form of attack; it's actually a fairly old one.
And what do to? That's easy.

What is Remote Desktop?
I've seen you reference something called "Remote Desktop", apparently it's something you use a lot. Just what is it? |
Remote Desktop is, pretty much, what it sounds like: the ability to access the desktop of one computer from another. But words don't do it justice, so let's do some words and pictures and see if we can't make the concept clearer.

Could someone reopen my closed email account?
I have terminated my Yahoo account. There's a clause in the form that says that after 90 days my user ID can be made available to others. Does that mean that if someone then snaps up my old user name they could start impersonating me? Would he see everyone on my contact list? Would my old contacts see him and think I was back on-line? |
Could that person try and impersonate you? Yes.
Will it be easy? Maybe.
This actually applies to all the services, not just Yahoo. The "90 days" part might change, but the basics would still apply.

How do I keep CHKDSK from running on every start up?
I have a two year old laptop running Windows XP. I had run "Defrag" and also clicked on the check drive for errors option, which was then scheduled at next restart. Now this scan program runs every time I start up. How can I shut this off? |
Good news: we can turn it off.
Bad news: it means editing the registry.
The "I'm not so sure" news: you shouldn't have to. It should have turned itself off, and I'm concerned that this might be trying to tell you something.

Can I delete the contents of my TMP folder?
Apart from the temp files created, or used, by Internet Explorer, is it safe to delete any other temp files? |
The short answer is yes, if you can. In fact, it might even be a good thing to do.
And it's also "safe" to delete the temporary files used by Internet Explorer, as long as you understand the ramifications.

This one comes up again, and again, and again. Svchost is mysterious, and because it keeps showing up in error messages, many people think it's to blame for a lot of Windows problems. It's not; not really.
What is svchost, and why is there more than one copy running?
Fire up Task Manager in Windows XP, hit the processes tab, and you'll see among other processes something called "svchost.exe". Again and again. In fact I have 5 copies running on my machine as I type this.

*** Thoughts and Comments
Welcome to the Friday the 13th edition of the newsletter. Hopefully no bad luck has befallen you. And hopefully I'll not have made too many mistakes getting this issue aut. :-)

I'm not a bot. Really. I'm not a bot... a bot... a bot...
But I might act like one next week.
As I mentioned last week I'll be heading out to a conference in Cleveland, Ohio. That means that Ask Leo! will be running somewhat on auto-pilot next week. Most of next weeks articles are already written and will be posted automatically. While I do expect to be well-connected (it is an "internet entrepreneurs" conference, after all - one would expect internet connectivity), I also expect to be swamped with conference related activities. So my assistant will be keeping an eye on the incoming flow of questions and comments while I'm away.
I just hope the threat of snow in the Cleveland area lifts. I'm from Seattle - I'm much more comfortable with rain.
'till next time...

I'll be honest: I'll try to respond, but I get a lot of questions every day - I just can't answer everyone. Rest assured, though, that even if you don't hear from me directly, I read every email I get.
