Why am I getting password reset mails for my Hotmail account?

I continually get emails from Hotmail saying I have requested for my password to be reset, and I most definitely have not requested this. I have had the same password for years (probably not a good idea) but could these repeated emails from Hotmail be a sign that someone is hacking into my account? |
Yes, while it's definitely not a good thing to leave your password unchanged for years at a time, I also know that changing it often is a pain. I'm as guilty as you are when it comes to my Hotmail account.
Unsolicited password requests aren't a good thing. The question is just how bad a thing are they? The answer varies.

Should I convert my FAT32 drives to NTFS?

I have Windows XP Pro on my computer, but both of my drives' file systems are FAT32. Should I change them to NTFS so that I can take advantage of certain features, like Windows-based encryption (instead of third party applications)? |
I tend to prefer NTFS over FAT32, though that even represents a change for me in recent years. There are a couple of reasons I've come to prefer NTFS, but I can tell you one thing:
Windows native encryption is not one of them.

Do I still need anti-virus software if my computer came with a security suite?

The McAfee Security Center that came with computer or with my MSN subscription. I'm not really sure where it came from, it was just there after I had my computer re-built. I've updated everything that needs to be updated and it says it's now protecting me from Viruses, Spyware, Adware, Firewall, everything. What I'm still wondering is since the McAfee Security Center on my computer is a free service, what's all this 'Needing-to-have-an-Anti-Virus-program'? People are paying for other products - why wouldn't they just get a free service that comes with their set-up? Do i still need to buy an Anti-Virus Package for my computer? |
There are several reasons that people might choose to purchase an anti-virus product.
The most obvious is that not everyone gets a security suite for free.
But even then, there are still reasons why people might elect to use a different solution, even paying money to do so.

What does it mean when my computer wont boot up and it says system fan error and check system fan? |
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be curt, but the message means exactly what it says: you need to check the fan in your system.
What fan? What's a fan? Which fan? And why?
Fair enough, let's review one of the most under-appreciated components of your system.

This is one I end up pointing people to very often. If you have an ethernet adapter in your computer you can use is as a fast way to connect two machines together to transfer files.
Can I network two computers with just a cable?
Yes.
BUT ... it's easy to get it wrong unless you know a couple of tricks. But once it's working, it's a very quick and handy way to transfer files and share an internet connection among just two machines.

Most of this week, I wasn't really here. :-) I had to step out of the day-to-day for some minor surgery (I'm totally fine, thanks) and decided that not working for a few days was probably a good thing prepare for. But I didn't want it to look that way.
That's the joy of computers and automated processes. Except for Thursday's, this weeks articles were all written last week. I just used software (imagine that!) to automatically publish something every day.
Turns out I didn't really need to - things went better than planned - so I used the "time off" from Ask Leo! to make significant progress for one of my clients who's in the middle of moving several websites to a new server.
The Seattle area weather has also cooperated nicely allowing me to do all that from the back patio.
So, from a (finally!) warm and sunny Pacific Nortwest...
