Edge: Controversial. Somewhat annoying. Generally under-featured.

That may all be changing (well, except for the controversial part). The new version of the Microsoft Edge Browser is based on ... wait for it ...

Chromium. The same technology on which the Google Chrome Browser is based.

I'm honestly saddened by how often I have to answer this question.

Installing is easy. Uninstalling? Well, perhaps not so much.

The Ask Leo! Live Webinar

I've already mentioned this to the patrons of Ask Leo!, as well as to my Facebook Fans, but at noon US Pacific Time, Thursday, March 5th, 2020, I'll be holding a live webinar.

My plan is to -- in real time -- demonstrate backing up a Windows 10 Home machine using the tools already built in to Windows. I'm setting aside at least an hour. You'll get to watch me do it step-by-step. Perhaps more importantly, you'll have the opportunity to ask me questions along the way, live and in real time. As I process the results of the last month's survey backing up continues to be an area many people feel they need help with, so it's an obvious place for me to start.

There'll be some wait time while the backup happens, of course, and perhaps after, if the backup happens quickly. During those times we'll do what I'll call an "ALA" -- Ask Leo Anything.

Edge Redeemed

Microsoft Edge, the new web browser included in Windows 10, has a long and troubled history.

When originally released 4.5 years ago now, it was cute, but under-featured. It didn't have everything necessary to fill the role as a full-featured browser you could rely on every day. In the intervening years, features were added, but progress was slow.

It didn't help that Microsoft's original approach to Edge was to ram it down user's throats by not only making it the default browser, but explicitly ignoring other choices in many circumstances.

The running joke was that Edge was the browser you fired up to download and install a different browser, such as Google Chrome.

That may no longer be the case.

As I mentioned last week, my year-long experiment revealed that using a laptop as my primary machine everywhere had some shortcomings — shortcomings that weren't easily fixed by changes to the laptop itself.

It was time to end the experiment and return to a more traditional desktop machine for my work here at home.

How Do I Hack Someone's Account?

I think my boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse is cheating on me. I want to hack into their email/instant message/Facebook/other account and find out what he/she/they is doing behind my back. Can you help me?

Can you get me the password for *****@hotmail.com/yahoo.com/facebook.com? This person's been saying really bad things about me and I want to hack in and teach him/her/them a lesson.

I've lost the password for *****@hotmail.com. Could you please find it and send it to *****@hotmail.com? It's really my account. Honest.

A family member has passed away, and I'd like to retrieve whatever was in his/her/their email account before it gets deleted for lack of use. But I don't have the password. Can you get it for me?

These are oversimplifications of many variations of the same basic question.

People want to hack into other people's accounts for a variety of reasons. Some, such as the last one, sound perfectly legitimate. Others, not so much. And others are just blatant attempts at theft, harassment, or revenge.

What's really scary is that I get these requests every day.

How Do I Completely Uninstall a Program?

How do you remove software program completely and safely from the PC? Years ago I ran into issues using aftermarket software that was supposed to remove all the components of an unwanted software program. They did just that, but at the same time, I discovered the hard way that some software shares other components once they are installed.

This turns out to be a surprisingly difficult question to answer.

As you've discovered, software installation is not simple. That some programs share components with other programs is only the tip of the iceberg.

Perhaps the answer is easier than I thought: how can you completely uninstall a program? You can't.
