As I somewhat suspected would be needed, I upgraded the RAM in my new laptop.

Are you using a compromised password? There's an extension for Google Chrome that will tell you. I recommend it.

That free trial you just downloaded; is it telling you that your system has a gazillion errors? Yeah, no. It's probably marketing.

The Journey to My New Computer: RAM Upgrade

My new laptop was capable of holding 32GB (gigabytes) of RAM, but for reasons I didn't bother to pursue, I could find it only available with 16GB pre-installed.

I didn't worry about it too much, knowing I could easily upgrade the RAM myself should I find it necessary.

I found it necessary. Smile

16GB worked fine, but it was clear that running virtual machines put a little too much stress on the machine, and RAM was the limiting factor.

Password Checkup: A Recommended Chrome Browser Extension

Keeping track of passwords is hard enough (though a good password vault helps a lot). But now, it seems, we need to start keeping track of all the various and sundry breaches that have occurred, possibly without knowing whether we're directly impacted.

Services like Have I Been Pwned? are a great start, particularly with its Pwned Passwords service, which lets you know if your account, or a password you use, is discovered in a breach. You can get notifications when your email address is discovered in a breach, but when it comes to passwords, it's still a manual process.

That's where Password Checkup comes in.

Why Do System Cleanup Utilities Report So Many Errors on a Supposedly Clean System?

I have a couple of good cleaning programs to protect my computer (which are usually recommended by you!). But occasionally, I get suckered into running a ‘free trial' of a program (like a registry cleaner). I may have just run my cleaner and have been given a clean bill of health, but when I run the ‘free trial', I invariably get hundreds of errors. Why?

What you're experiencing is what leads me and many others to avoid recommending entire classes of registry and system-cleaning utilities.

It's not just a few bad apples that spoil the entire bunch; in this case, it's often difficult to find an apple worth biting into at all.
