Should I Upgrade to Windows 10?

Windows 10 has been out for a while, and, particularly given Microsoft's aggressive marketing campaign, one of the most common questions is the most basic:

Should you upgrade?

Like so many things, it depends.

I've discussed it in a couple of places, but I'll make my canonical recommendations here, and update this article as things change.

What Is An Email Quota and What Does "Over Quota" Mean?

After I did a recovery on my computer, my email program has not worked properly as far as the inbox is concerned. I used to be able to get 700-800 or more emails in my inbox (if I went on vacation or didn't check for a while) and after the recovery, once I reached about 80 emails it started bouncing my messages saying I was OVER QUOTA!!! How can that be? It is getting worse now. I can have only 40 messages in my inbox and it will start bouncing my messages, still saying I am OVER QUOTA! Soon, I won't get ANY messages!

Believe it or not, being over quota has nothing to do with the inbox on your PC, or even what email program you're using.

But it might have everything to do with how your email program is configured.

Glossary Term

proxy

A proxy acts as an intermediary for certain types of transactions on the internet.

The most common is probably a web proxy. When configured to use a proxy, a web browser makes its requests of the proxy, not of the actual website being requested. The proxy then makes those requests on behalf of the browser, and returns the result.

For example, normally when browsing a website such as askleo.com, a web browser connects directly to the server hosting the web site and requests whatever pages the reader wants to view. When configured to use a proxy, the browser connects instead to a proxy server to make its requests. The proxy server then connects to the desired website – askleo.com in this case – on behalf of the original web browser.

Proxies can be used for several different reasons, but most commonly, they implement some kind of filtering: either restricting what sites can be viewed, or examining the information returned by those sites for malware and perhaps other prohibited content.

Should I Upgrade to Windows 10?

Bill Bright writes:

I finally upgraded a few weeks ago from 8.1 to 10. I am very happy with Windows 10 and had no issues with the upgrade. I was a bit nervous when I started the process though.

rodney waller writes:

been on windows 10 for months now and couldn't be happier.I especially like the security and maintenance automatic checks.

Ray Smith writes:

"There is a tremendous amount of FUD relating to Windows 10's supposed invasion of user privacy." - Indeed there is. And this is one of the more informed - and entertaining - commentaries on the subject: http://www.zdnet.com/article/when-it-comes-to-windows-10-privacy-dont-trust-amateur-analysts/

Another reason I don't do negative reviews

Ray Smith writes:

Interesting. The European Court of Human Rights recently ruled that websites were not responsible for their readers' comments: http://hudoc.echr.coe.int/eng?i=001-160314#{"itemid":["001-160314"]}

Leo writes:

Still doesn't prevent people from suing even if only to stir up troubles. (But that's really good to know.... at one point the act of moderating comments - as I do here - I believe made me more liable than a site that didn't. Hence so many other sites did not moderate comments, and the result was a horrific cesspool of comments. I couldn't live with that.)
