Opening Phishing Holes with New Top-Level Domains

You're used to seeing domains ending in .com, .net, and many other of what are called the top-level domains.

But ... .bank? .microsoft? .paypal?

Perhaps even .leo? .askleo?

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is in the process of rolling out the ability to purchase your own top level domain. It's not cheap (you won't be seeing .askleo any time soon), but it is happening.

Unfortunately, one of the expected side effects is a massive increase in phishing attempts. And if you're not careful, you could fall victim.

Can you give away a Kindle book after you're done reading it?

I know you can share a Kindle book but can you give it away completely to another Kindle user when you are done reading it?

*

Kindle includes the ability purchase a book for someone else, or to loan your book to someone for a period of time, but I'm not aware of a way to give a book you've purchased for yourself to someone else.

In this audio segment from an Ask Leo! webinar I discuss Kindle sharing - the closest solution to what you're looking for - how it works and why I think it's pretty cool.

Why did the first track of my newly burned audio CD not play properly?

I recently tried to burn an audio CD using Windows Media Player. I used a CDR. When I tried to play it back all of the tracks played perfectly on both computers and CD players except for the first one. When I burned the album again to the new disc all of the tracks worked. Any ideas why this might have happened?

*

CD audio is actually quite a different format than that used on data CDs. Nonetheless it's just as susceptible to recording and playback errors.

In this audio segment from an Ask Leo! webinar I'll discuss what kinds of things can lead to a CD having problems - even if it's just a single track on an audio CD.

linux

Linux is an operating system, much in the way that Microsoft Windows is an operating system or Apple's MacOS. Operating systems are the software that fundamentally control the operation of a computer, and provide a consistent interface or API that programs can use to access the features and functionality of the operating system and computer.

Linux was actually written from scratch, originally by Linus Torvalds. It was modeled extremely closely after the Unix operating system, a proprietary system developed by Bell Labs. Linux is free and open source software.

There is no "generic" Linux; rather it's made available via various "distributions", each tailored to meet specific criteria. Each distribution is Linux, but they are not necessarily binary compatible with each other (i.e. programs that run on one distribution may or may not run on another), and often differ greatly in the user interface and software selection presented to the user.

Popular distributions include Ubuntu, which itself is based on the Debian distribution, Mint, Fedora, openSUSE and more. Puppy Linux is an example of a distribution specifically designed to minimize system requirements. Even the Android OS used in many phones and tablets is based on Linux.

DBAN - Darik's Boot And Nuke

I get questions surrounding data recovery fairly often. People are often concerned that files they've deleted might be recoverable after the fact, and it's good and security conscious of them to be concerned.

At the other end of the spectrum are people who give no thought at all to the potential recoverability of their data, and discard old computers and hard drives without giving it a second thought. We often hear about people who've picked up an old computer at a recycler or yard sale, only to find that the hard disk is full of the previous owner's sensitive data.

Identity theft often follows.
