Can a sender tell where I'm reading my mail?
Can someone who's sent a mail to my Hotmail address tell what IP address I actually read it on?
Maybe.
Or, to put it another way, if you're not careful, absolutely. And they might even be able to tell when. And it's not just Hotmail.
I know this seems like it contradicts what I've said elsewhere: email cannot be traced. Let me explain.

Should I wait for Windows Vista?
I am currently looking for a notebook to replace my desktop. I am in no rush to buy it, although it would be nice to have it now. My desktop is a little sluggish, but it still does everything I need it to do. I was wondering what your thoughts are about waiting for Windows Vista to come out vs. buying a notebook now. Also, if I do buy a system now, approximately how much would I need to spend to get a system that will transition smoothly to Vista when it comes out?
In many ways, it really depends on how long you're willing to wait. As we all know from direct experience, once you purchase a computer - any computer - a newer/better/faster/sexier model comes out just moments later.
Adding Windows Vista to the mix makes things even more difficult.

How do I keep from getting my account hacked?
My MSN HotMail account has been hacked into several times. If I'm able to recover it, it just gets hacked again. Sometimes I can't recover it, and I have to start all over with a new account. What can I do to stop this all from happening?
No, I don't get this question a lot. But I really, really wish I did. What I get over and over and over again is the related "I've been hacked, please recover my account/password for me!"
Which, for the record I cannot do. No matter how often, or how nicely, you ask. The only salvation is in prevention, and this applies to email, IM and pretty much any passworded account you might have.
So what can you do to make sure your account doesn't get hacked into in the first place?

How can I send and receive FAXes using my PC?
I have Windows XP. Would I be able to send and receive faxes, and if so how do I do it? Would I need new hardware?
I find myself dealing with this on a semi-regular basis. There are some industries that are still using FAXes as a primary means of doing business. Seems like "old technology" to me, but I'm apparently not about to change my bank's mind.
The good news is that there are several approaches, many of which don't require any additional hardware - depending, of course, on your needs and what hardware you already have.

How do I direct my web traffic to a single domain?
I own several domains - mostly variations and misspellings on my "real" domain, and of course have the domains both with, and without, "www". I've been told it's a good idea to have them all end up in a single place. I know how to make them all show the same content, but I'm told that's not enough. What is, and how do I do it?
OK, this one's geeky, and is obviously aimed at webmasters who are managing their sites. But it's another question I actually get on a regular basis from folks who've visited my site.
Yes, it's easy to get "example.com" and "www.example.com" to show the same content, and essentially "be" the same site. But if you're looking to maximize your search engine placement, and present a single, unified site - that may not be enough.

Recent versions of both Outlook and Outlook Express have been changed to prevent access to attachments by default. You need to take some additional steps to allow you to access those attachments again.
Microsoft has the perception of designing many of its products with lax security, the most common example being that default settings impose little or no safety restrictions. As security issues have become more of a focus, Microsoft has slowly been making changes to make applications more secure by default. The Outlook's are two examples.

Once upon a time, I was going to write an ebook. As I developed Ask Leo! using MovableType as my publishing platform, I found myself doing various things to enhance, tweak, customize and optimize the site. Various friends encouraged me to publish what I'd done in the form of an ebook.
That was, oh, about two years ago by now. I'd actually gotten very close to publishing, but then decided that ebooks, at least for now, aren't something that I want to deal with.
Websites, on the other hand... :-)
So, over the past few weeks I've been slowly taking my ebook a chapter at a time and putting it out on "Leo's MovableType Tips" or http://www.mttips.com. It has a fairly familiar look and feel to it.
If you use MovableType, or know someone who does, perhaps you, or they, might find the site useful.

Life, as they say, is full. I'm still looking for that 26 hour day, though with my luck, those extra hours will also get filled with even more to do. Technically I'm "retired" from Microsoft, but various things, including Ask Leo! are keeping me busier then ever.
This week I'll be speaking at a benefit luncheon for a local nursing home and long term care facility. Nothing techie, this time - I'll be the guy up there asking people to donate money to the cause. And it's a great cause - long term care is expensive. As our population ages it's only going to get worse in coming years.
Ask Leo! is also one of the luncheon sponsors. A portion of the revenue generated by the site is actually benefiting a couple of organizations on Seattle's east side - this is one of them.

Psshutdown command works beautifully but when I remotely switch on XP machine from Ghost console(the pc was power off) use -r switch, the PC start it get into log on prompt then reboot it again.
How can I stop the “second time” restart.
