Connection, connection, who's got the connection?

It's really easy to get confused between internet connections, Wi-Fi connections, mobile connections, hot spots, access points, mobile devices used as hotspots, and more. When you connect, what comes from where, and how does it get here?

That became particularly interesting during a recent two-day power outage after the storm. All the connections were used in one way or another.
