Hello. I hope your day is going well. :-)
Terms we take for granted, but often misuse? While the difference might seem pedantic, do you know the difference between the web and the internet?
We've all seen it, but just what the heck does it mean? Internal Server Error is usually out of our control, but there are a few things we can try to get past it.
Web-based or desktop-based email? It's not quite a religious argument, but there are definitely some pros and cons to each. The difference is worth understanding, particularly when it comes to backing up.
I'm often asked about "batch files" in Windows. They're the text files that contain a series of Windows Command Prompt commands. (Bonus points if you still call it DOS or a "DOS box". ). I've made a deal with my friend Allen Wyatt out at tips.net to offer you a copy of his ebook Understanding and Using Batch Files. It's listed in my store at the cover price, but as newsletter subscribers you can get 20% off just by entering the coupon code that's present near the bottom of every emailed newsletter. Understanding and Using Batch Files is a great introduction to batch files, what they are, and some of the nifty things you can do with them.
As always, I hope you find this week's newletter helpful...

What's the Difference Between the Web and the Internet?
In general usage, the terms seem almost synonymous. In practice, I suppose, it matters little if we misuse one to mean the other.
But they're two very different things. More precisely, one is a strict subset of the other. And that other is much, much larger than we think.

What's an "Internal Server Error" and How Do I Fix It?
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator webmaster@******.com and inform them of the time the error occurred and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
How is this resolved?
I'm very familiar with this error. I see it all the time when setting up or making changes to websites.
The good news? It's not your fault.
The bad news? There's probably nothing you can do.

What are the Pros and Cons of Web-based Email Over Desktop Email?
Web-based and PC-based are different ways to approach email.
As you can imagine, there are arguments in favor for and against each. Which is most appropriate for you depends on many things, not the least of which is what “feels” right to you.
I'll look at both, identify what I think are the important issues, and outline my own approach.
