Ask Leo! #724 – How Do I Send an Email that Can’t Be Traced Back to Me?

Hello again,

As always, thank you for allowing me to visit your inbox. It's both an honor and a privilege.

I've collected some of my free downloads on a new free resources page. It includes both The Ask Leo! Guide to Staying Safe on the Internet ' FREE Edition, as well as my special report 10 Reasons Your Computer is Slow (and what to do about it). These were both bonuses for subscribing to the newsletter, but I've heard from some folks that they never got around to downloading them. I'll be adding to this page from time to time.

I'm frequently asked about anonymous email -- more specifically how to send an email without being identified. How Do I Send an Email that Can't Be Traced Back to Me? is all about the difficulties involved. It's possible, but ya gotta be careful.

One of the reasons people don't use cloud storage is because they're afraid their data will be exposed. Encryption is the answer. BoxCryptor: Secure Your Data in the Cloud covers a tool that I use literally every day that allows me to feel completely safe storing (and backing up) some of my most personal information online.

It surprises me somewhat that this question is still as popular as it is, but How Do I Upgrade Windows From 32-bit to 64-bit? remains so. My guess is that folks are getting around to adding RAM to their machines, or perhaps upgrading older machines that are 64-bit capable.

Finally, last week my wife, the dogs, and I went camping to one of our favorite state parks out on the Pacific Ocean. I took a few pictures.

Enjoy this week's newletter...

How Do I Send an Email that Can't Be Traced Back to Me?

There are problems at work that I need to inform my main office about. The problem I'm having is that the emails sent to the office are seen by several people if I send them at work. If I send from home, my personal email address will be revealed and I need to remain anonymous. The politics at my workplace are vicious to say the least. What software is available so that I can send them an anonymous email and my email address be hidden?

This is a surprisingly common situation.

It's also surprisingly easy to get caught, even if you do take steps to stay hidden.

I'll review some of the approaches and some of the risks.

BoxCryptor: Secure Your Data in the Cloud

One of the hidden issues in online storage is privacy. Almost all online storage providers have the ability to examine your data or hand it over to law enforcement even if the provider has encrypted your data.

Hopefully, most of us will never have to deal with the law-enforcement scenario, but even the realization that a rogue employee at an online data storage provider could peek into what we keep online can cause concern. For some, it's enough concern to avoid using cloud storage at all.

The solution is simple: encrypt the data yourself.

Unfortunately, implementing that “simple” solution isn't always that simple or transparent, and can add a layer of complexity to online storage some find intimidating.

BoxCryptor is a nicely unobtrusive encryption solution that is free for personal use.

How Do I Upgrade Windows from 32-bit to 64-bit?

I'm using Windows 10, 32-bit on a computer with 64-bit hardware. How do I upgrade to 64-bit Windows? I have 10 GB of RAM on my computer.

This question continues to pop up, even after all this time.

The news is mixed.

The good news is that 10GB is plenty of RAM for 64-bit Windows. By running 32-bit, you've only been using, at most, four gigabytes of your memory.

Unfortunately, the path to get there from here isn't as easy as we might want.
