How do I view a full-screen application in a window in Windows 8?

After the tiled start-up interface, the most common complaint I've heard so far about Windows 8 is that applications started from a tile start up full screen.

In fact, it's a different full screen than in previous versions - you might say that the applications are "fuller" screen, with no apparent way to minimize, restore, or in some cases, even exit the application.

While that appears to be partly true for some applications, it's fortunately not the case for many more.

What are the security ramifications of moving a file to another disk?

DickW writes:

Thanks for the info re TrueCrypt. Really good to know -- but it raises all sorts of related questions that I had ever considered before. May I assume that the processes you describe also apply to DropBox and BoxCrypt as they also are virtual drives? When I move a file into Dropox, it is deleted from the disk drive? When I encrypt a file by moving it into BoxCrypt, the original file is deleted from the original disk? When a file in DropBox is opened from a remote device and is then worked on, there is a copy left on the remote device? And what about individual files that are encrypted but not 'moved' to another drive -- such as a when I use Office to password protect an Excel file, is the data still in the clear some where? Or when I use AxCrypt to password protect an individual file and work on it, is the data left on the disk drive somewhere?

Basically any thing that involves moving a file from one drive or volume to another has the potential to cause leave behind a traditionally "deleted" and recoverable copy of the file being moved. When you say "worked on" what happens depends entirely on the program used to work on a file - it's possible that temporary files and deleted temporary files could be left. Or not. Working on an encrypted Office file is a different scenario, so I'm not sure exactly what happens. I believe AxCrypt cleans up after itself properly. Bottom line: when unsure, assume the worst and clean up temporary files and use secure delete and free space wipers, if it matters.

How often do I need to run complete anti-malware scans?

Jonathan McRobert writes:

"Any tool, in the hands of a fool, can be dangerous."

That said, before tackling any task on your computer, read up about the process and understand what you are doing first. When it comes to fixing problems regarding viruses and malware, simply downloading, installing and running every program out there may end up doing you more harm than good. And don't take the advice of someone just because so-and-so said they are a computer guru or whatever.

There are lots of resources available on the web. Ask Leo for one, and so many more...and don't be afraid to get a second or third opinion. And educate yourself. YOU are the most important part of an anti-malware regimen, and if YOU are out of date, even the best software won't be much good in protecting you.

I follow a schedule similar to Leo's, with anti-virus/malware running resident (Avast free) plus I also run Malwarebytes resident as well. With its real-time monitoring, it's definitely worth the small one-time cost.

Remember: No single anti-virus/security tool handles everything. And the most important thing you can do to protect your data...back it up with at least 2 separate sets.

Should I use Windows File Compression?

David writes:

Leo, does compressing pictures or audio files make them suffer any loss of quality (in the same way as converting, for example, a .png as a .jpg) ? - which example I take to be irreversible. Many thanks and Season's Greetings to you - David

No. Generic compression algorithms like .zip, or Windows File Compression, are lossless.

7-zip file archiving utility

Most of you are probably familiar with "ZIP" files, which are compressed archives that pack one or more files into a single file. ZIP files are often a convenient way to distribute large numbers of files and folder structures in a single container.

You're probably also familiar with Windows somewhat cumbersome built-in support for ZIP files, as well as WinZIP, the shareware file compression utility that lets you create and extract files from ZIP formatted archives.

7-zip is a free, open-source utility roughly equivalent to WinZIP, that includes support for multiple file formats as well as a command-line interface.

I highly recommend 7-zip.
