Where do downloads go?
When I download ebooks off the internet, I can never find them. Where do they go on my computer?
It depends on how you download. Typically they go into your "My Documents" folder, so we'll look at how best to check that.
But it's also possible that they went into the same folder as the last download - which means that if you ever changed the download folder for one item, you might have moved where everything thereafter is placed. We'll look at that, and how to fix it as well.
There's another place that downloads often end up that's kind of dangerous, as its "cleaned up" every so often - meaning you could eventually lose your download. We'll look at what that is, and how to avoid it.
And we'll look at how to find your file, regardless of where it landed.

Does Linux have a role in the home?
With all the issues surrounding Microsoft Windows, do you think the day might come in the near future where those of us in the middle ground of technology, those home users who know enough to keep our boxes up and running and to tinker here and there, might want/be able to switch to one of the friendlier distributions of Linux?
What do you think? Is the Linux community gaining enough common ground that it one day might be a viable alternative?
Absolutely. That day is coming.
In fact, I've become enamored with one particular Linux distribution that's really caused me to believe that, for exactly the crowd you describe, that day might just be today.
But as I'm also finding out, it really depends on what you do with your computer. Some things aren't quite there yet.

How did you get my IP address?
I just read your automated answer to the question I posted, and you've got me worried. I can see my IP address in your answer. How did you do that? Does that mean that if I email you you also get my IP address?
I'm constantly amazed at how many people are concerned about the privacy of their IP address.
I guess I shouldn't be that amazed, because of the number of other questions I get by people trying to trace an IP address to a specific person or location.
Folks, there is no privacy with respect to your IP address. But that does not mean just anyone can actually find you.

What's this backwards P all over my email?
In my outlook email I now have what looks like a letter "p" and back arrows, at the end of each line! How do I remove them?
What you're seeing are probably paragraph marks.
The fact that you're seeing them is benign, and easy to turn off. But it also tells me a little bit about your configuration.
While it's really a matter of personal preference, I see it as a sign of a larger problem.

Zone Alarm firewall: do I need it if I'm behind a NAT router?
I have a WinXP Pro PC behind a NAT router and am getting tired of Zone Alarm to the point where I think Zone Alarm is creating more problems than it solves. Some have suggested that I do not need a software firewall as long as I practice safe computing. Do you agree? And can you recommend a different free software firewall solution just to satisfy my paranoia?
As you've seen, there differing opinions on this. In reality it does, indeed, depend on how you use your system and how "safe" your safe computing really is.
It's also important to understand that there are a few things that a software firewall like Zone Alarm can do that NAT routers typically don't.
Let me tell you what I do, and you can draw your own conclusions.

In between bouts of frustration with my inbox, I've been reading your various articles on spam. I think I'm slowly getting a handle on it all, but it sure seems crazy. And it really got me to wondering... why is there so much spam in the first place?
I feel your pain.
I recently did some research for another project of mine, Taming Email, and looked at all my email for last year. Not only do I get a lot of email, but my calculations show that 87% of it was junk. Wow.

As I expected, time was short this week. In fact, I'm doing double duty today - selling dolls at my wife's doll shop while I'm compiling this week's newsletter.
One thing I did find a few minutes to squeeze in this week was some more time playing with Ubuntu Linux. I'm impressed. My position has always been that Linux isn't ready for the masses, for several reasons. But Ubuntu is definitely a step in the right direction. For those of you who don't feel like a geek, but might consider yourself a little adventuresome and feel ok with tweaking things from time to time, now might be a fine time to use Ubuntu to investigate if Linux is right for you.
Grab an old machine, or use one of the virtual machine solutions such as Parallels Desktop, and give it a whirl.
It's highly likely that within the next 6 to 12 months, Ubuntu might well be the operating system running the cash register at a certain doll shop.
