Confident Computing #841 - Why You're Being Warned About Windows 10 End of Service and What to Do About It

This week's articles & videos

Apparently some folks have been getting a notification from Windows 10 that it's on the verge of "end of service". Given Windows 10 was supposed to be the last version of Windows, and it was supposed to work on our machines "forever", that's confusing and perhaps even frightening.

Well, Microsoft did backtrack on at least one promise, but to understand what's really going on we need to also understand the difference between a version and a version.

Yeah. I know. Terminology confuses yet again. I'll lay it all out in this week's featured article Why You're Being Warned About Windows 10 End of Service and What to Do About It.

Also this week:

  • No, you cannot prevent someone from forwarding a message. Period.
  • Sites and apps may ask for location permission ... should you grant it? Well, it depends.
  • How should you manage data you want to keep for decades?

Gary and I took a week off for the holiday.

Because I apparently needed another newsletter

It's a long(ish) story, but I'm trying to do a better job of reading more substantial material -- both books and articles. To that end I've imposed on myself a weekly deadline by adding a weekly newsletter to my weekly to-do list. Nothing says "deadline" like a newsletter schedule.

You can read more about what I'm up to over on my personal blog Upping My Reading Game.

And you can see the result of it all here at 7 Takaways. And, yes, you can sign up for the weekly newsletter there, if you like. There are already a couple of examples.

Years ago some friends were discussing what to say if you were a passenger in a car driving less carefully than you might appreciate. The goal was to express concern while avoiding offending the driver with a criticism which might possibly make it worse. The consensus at the time was that "Whee!!!" might capture the moment.

This is the last newsletter for 2020. Whee!!!!!

May our 2021 be better.

Take care,

Leo
